Black Liquor oxidation is the transformation of Sodium Sulphide (Na2S) to Sodium Thiosulphate (Na2S2O3).

The benefits of this are as follows:

1. The use of Black Liquor Oxidation (BLO) is a proven method of reducing Total Reduced Sulphur (TRS) emissions from direct contact recovery boilers.

2. Reduction of the thermal load on the recovery boiler by reducing the heating value of the black liquor before it is fired.

3. Increase in capacity of the evaporators by recovering the heat of oxidation.

4. Reduce the amount of make up chemicals needed to maintain a sulphur and sodium balance.

After a full plant audit, Air Products will implement its patented technology in a manner best suited to the individual mill.
